The Somm Journal, Meredith May – 95 Points, Editor’s Pick
Roses perfume nose and palate, with benevolent white cherries garnishing cinnamon-kissed red apples. Mid-point earthiness sets a delicate tone, without interrupting the aromatics of fruit and floral. Winemaker Moret Chavez notes that this was the coldest vintage in memory, from an already cool climate AVA.
Good Vitis, Aaron Menenberg – 95 Points, Value A+
The deep nose combines aromas of blueberry, blackberry, plum, sweet tobacco, and rose potpourri. Bright acid on the medium body ushers in finely grained, dense tannin. The structure shows a lot of finesse and elegance, and is well-balanced. The delicate and delineated flavors include cherry, raspberry, blueberry, black pepper, moist soil, and worn leather. This is an utterly delicious, structurally impressive, and spectacular wine. You can drink this over the next three years with zero doubt or guilt about whether you should keep it any longer. That said, I’d stick one of these in the cellar and see how it is in five or ten years.
View From The Cellar, John Gilman – 93 Points
The 2023 vintage is the first Sonoma Coast bottling from Morét Brealynn, as she was able to buy a few of tons of pinot noir grapes from the well-known Charles Heintz Vineyard (first made
famous by Terry Leighton at Kalin Cellars and then Ted Lemon at Littorai). The wine includes twenty-five percent whole clusters in its debut vintage and was raised in fifty percent new casks
and fifty percent one wine barrels. It tips the scales at 14.1 percent alcohol and delivers a refined aromatic constellation of black cherries, sweet dark berries, raw cocoa, beautiful savory overtones,
a fine base of soil and a very suave framing of new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, ripe and full-bodied, with lovely precision and structural elegance, a superb core of fruit, lovely soil undertow, beautifully buried tannins and a long, tangy, vibrant and complex finish. I love the very graceful sense of balance and backend lift of this wine! 2032-2060+.
