Description
A blend of 80% Grenache, 16% Syrah, 2% Mourvedre, and 2% Carignan from 60-year-old vines in Lirac. Situated on the Galets roulés (rolled pebbles – although the stones are oftentimes larger than your head), this remarkable wine truly shows its Grenache character in its abundant fruit, while the Syrah and touch of Mourvedre and Carignan add both structure and complexity. Aged 51% in French oak and 49% in stainless steel.
93 POINTS – THE SOMM JOURNAL
From Winemakers Adam Lee and Morét-Brealynn Chavez, this is a blend of 80% Grenache, 16% Syrah, and 4% co-fermented Carignan/Mourvèdre from 60-year-old vines. Clove and white pepper, along with dusted cherry-cocoa, offer a slight astringency. Acidity is fresh, with baking spices surrounding earth and herbal tones. All in all, a fascinating red that possesses superb food-pairing abilities. Fittingly, the word Essen translates from German “to eat” or “food.”
